Trailblazers take set over WAC-leading Ladyjacks

The Trailblazers became only the second team to win a set against Stephen F. Austin in WAC play this season, but fell in four sets on Thursday night at Burns Arena.

(St. George, Utah – Oct. 19, 2023) - Dropping only their second set in its last nine matches, the Trailblazer volleyball team took a set over visiting WAC-leading Stephen F. Austin, but fell in four sets on Thursday night at Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (7-12, 3-6 WAC), who won only the second set over Stephen F. Austin (20-3, 9-0 WAC) since WAC play began on Sept. 23, dropped the first two sets, 19-25, 19-25, before winning a marathon third set, 32-30 and dropped the final set, 25-14.

Leading the Blazers in kills for the 12th time this season, Kennedi Knudsen posted a team-leading 16 kills and added 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.

Taylor Snow and Hannah Howard added 13 & 10 kills, respectively, while freshman Marley Roe tallied season highs in both assists (39) and digs (17).

After a kill by Knudsen tied the opening set at nine apiece, the Ladyjacks went on a 9-3 run to take an 18-12 advantage. Three straight points for the Blazers momentarily got Utah Tech back within three at 18-15 before five straight points for SFA extended their lead to eight a and won the set by six.

A 7-0 run midway through the second set put Stephen F. Austin ahead 18-9 and the visitors extended it to 11 at 21-10 before the Blazers were able to get as close as five (24-19) after a Ladyjack attack error as a kill by SFA closed out the set.

A marathon third set saw 25 ties and six lead changes with tie scores at 22 through 30. With the Blazers able to stave off match points at 25, 26 and 27, an attack error for the Ladyjacks put UT up 28-27, but three of the next four points went to SFA for a 30-29 lead. A pair of attack errors by SFA and a kill by Knudsen gave UT a back-and-forth set win to break the Ladyjacks streak of three straight sweeps.

Stephen F. Austin jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the fourth set and SFA extended it to 18-10 after a service ace. The Ladyjacks went on a 7-4 run down the stretch to move their winning streak to nine.

Utah Tech wraps up its four-match homestand on Saturday hosting UT Arlington (16-6, 5-4 WAC) at 1 p.m. at Burns Arena.
