Trailblazers drop final road match to Grand Canyon

Dixie State volleyball dropped its final road match of the season on Saturday, falling in three sets (14-25, 16-25, 23-25) to Grand Canyon inside the GCU Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.

Grand Canyon built a 7-2 lead in the first set before Dixie State responded with three of the next four points to trim the advantage to 8-5. The 'Lopes erased DSU's run with a 6-1 spurt to jump to a 14-6 lead. The Trailblazers would later pull to within five points at 19-14, but GCU scored the next six points to claim the 25-14 set win.

The teams went back-and-forth early in the second set and saw the score tied at 4-4, 6-6, and 7-7. The 'Lopes bucked the trend with four consecutive points to build an 11-7 lead, but DSU immediately countered with three straight points to pull back to within one point at 11-10. GCU responded with a 5-0 run to push the lead back 16-10 and outscored DSU by a 10-6 count through the rest of the frame to earn a 25-16 set victory.

The Trailblazers built their largest lead of the match at 5-2 in the third set before Grand Canyon countered with a 12-5 run to take a 14-10 lead midway through the frame. Both sides traded points until DSU used a 4-1 spurt to pull to within 20-19 late in the set. The 'Lopes answered with four of the next six points to push the lead back to 24-21. Dixie State fought off two straight GCU match points to cut the lead to 24-23, but the home side extinguished any hope of a fourth set with a point on the next play to snag the 25-23 set triumph and win the match.

Dixie State finished with 33 kills on a .171 hitting percentage. Whittnee Nihipali posted a team-high 10 kills for her seventh double-figure kill performance of the season. Bridgett Talia added eight kills, while Kate Hardy finished with six kills and a solo block. Taela Laufiso recorded a team-best 18 assists, and Mykenna Nelson finished with a team-high 15 digs.

The Trailblazers return to the Burns Arena next week for their final two matches of the season and will host Seattle U on Thursday and California Baptist on Saturday for Senior Day.
