Trailblazer Softball wins two games on final day of Courtyard Classic

DSU posts a 5-0 record at the round-robin tournament

The Dixie State softball team closed the 2020 Courtyard Classic in winning style on Saturday, claiming victories in both of its games at the Canyons Softball Complex.

The Trailblazers (6-1) opened the day with a 4-1 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, before holding off Western Washington for a 2-1 victory in the final game to finish the tournament with a 5-0 record.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 4, Cal State Dominguez Hills 1

The Trailblazers opened the scoring in the top of the third when Brenna Cornwall singled up the middle to score Kasey Crawford from third and Kirsten Quigley from second to give DSU a 2-0 lead.

Cal State Dominguez Hills pulled one run back in the bottom of the fifth on a fielder's choice play that scored a runner from third base to cut the lead to 2-1.

Dixie State countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to the final tally of 4-1. Laura Lockard led off the inning with a single to right center, setting up a two-run home run to left field by Brylee Rudd for her first collegiate home run.

Cornwall posted a three-hit, 2 RBI performance to lead DSU at the plate, while Hannah Hughbanks notched two hits. Carissa Burgess tossed a complete-game victory in the circle, striking out six.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 2, Western Washington 1

The Trailblazers and Vikings played through three-and-a half scoreless innings before DSU broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth.

Kaylan Walker singled through the right side to lead off the frame, then moved to third base after a sacrifice bunt and infield single. Shea Clements broke the scoreless draw with a single up the middle, allowing Walker to score and DSU to take a 1-0 lead.

Dixie State later tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Like the fourth inning, Walker led off in the sixth. And like the fourth inning, she reached base safely, this time drawing a walk. Four batters later, Walker crossed the plate to extend the lead to 2-0 when Crawford singled up the middle.

The Trailblazers' sixth-inning run proved to be crucial, as the Vikings cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the seventh with back-to-back doubles. With a runner in scoring position, DSU needed one more out to secure the win. And it got just that. Ashtyn Bauerle battled through a seven-pitch at-bat to notch her fourth strikeout of the game to end the contest.

After hitting a home run in the first game, Rudd picked up where she left off with two hits in the second game to post DSU's lone multi-hit performance of the game. Bauerle earned her first win in a Trailblazer uniform, allowing five hits with four strikeouts in the complete-game victory.

Dixie State will host Northwest Nazarene as part of a "Stand Up To Cancer" doubleheader, beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday at Karl Brooks Field.
