Dixie State began the defense of its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball title with a dominant 3-0 sweep of Black Hills State Friday night inside the DSU SAC. The win, the Trailblazers' fifth-straight overall, moved DSU to 6-3 overall, 1-0 in RMAC play.
The Blazers wasted little time setting the tone for the match as they scored 10 of the first 12 points en route to a quick 10-2 lead in set one. The Yellow Jackets (2-7/0-1 RMAC) shook off the rough start and outscored Dixie State 14-6 to pull even at 16-16, however DSU answered with a 9-1 run, including the final seven points, to claim the frame 25-17.
After spotting BHSU its first lead of the match on the opening serve of set two, Dixie State scored six-straight points and would not see its lead dip below three points as the Trailblazers rolled to a 25-14 set win. DSU then closed the sweep by a 25-15 count in the third and final stanza.
Megan Treanor and
To'a Faleao led the Trailblazers eight kills apiece, while
Sydney Johnson added seven kills and
Lauren Gammell finished with five kills. DSU hit .293 for the match with 35 total kills to just eight attack errors, including a .379 clip in set two and a .320 average in the third stanza.
Meanwhile, the Blazer defense was simply dominant as Dixie State held BHSU to an opponent season-low -.050 hitting percentage and forced 25 Yellow Jacket attack errors (20 total kills). DSU tallied 12.0 team blocks, including six total blocks for Gammell (1 solo) and five block assists from
Lizzy Clark.
The Trailblazers continue RMAC play Saturday night in the DSU SAC against South Dakota Mines beginning at 6 p.m.
