DSU Women fall at Dominican Thursday, 98-80

Five Trailblazers finish in double figures in the loss

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped a 98-80 decision to Dominican on Thursday night inside the Conlan Center in San Rafael, California.

The Trailblazers (8-10, 4-7 PacWest) jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the first quarter after Ali Franks (Redding, Calif./Enterprise HS) buried a 3-pointer, followed by a Kristin Baldwin (Thatcher, Ariz./Thatcher HS) jumper. Dominican answered with a triple before Taylor Moeaki (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) connected from outside to stake DSU to an 8-3 advantage at the 7:01 mark. But the lead didn't last long as the Penguins closed the frame on an 18-6 run to take a 21-14 lead heading to the second quarter.

Dominican picked up where it left off in the second period and pushed the lead to 48-30 at the 3:14 mark. DSU countered with a 6-0 run, including four points by Tramina Jordan (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS), to trim the lead to 48-36 with 1:12 until halftime. But the Penguins seized momentum of the game just before the intermission, scoring back-to-back baskets to take a 52-36 lead.

The Penguins continued to stretch the lead in the second half, pushing the lead to 77-48 late in the third quarter. Dominican maintained a 20-point lead throughout the fourth quarter until Jordan converted a 3-point attempt to trim the lead to 94-76 late in the final frame. The teams then traded baskets and ran the score to the final tally of 98-80.

Dixie State shot 46 percent (30-of-64) from the field, 30 percent (8-of-26) from 3-point range, and 75 percent (12-of-16) from the free throw line. Five DSU players finished in double figures for the first time this season, led by Franks with 18 points. Jordan and Matti Ventling (Las Vegas, Nev./Las Vegas HS) added 12 points each, while Moeaki and Maile Richardson (American Fork, Utah/American Fork HS) each contributed 11 points.

The Trailblazers close their four-game trip on Saturday at Academy of Art in San Francisco. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time (2:30 p.m. MT).
