Dixie State pushed its winning streak to three-straight after knocking off Azusa Pacific on Senior Day Saturday, 3-0, inside the DSU SAC.
APU (20-6/13-5 PacWest), which had entered the match ranked fifth in the NCAA West Region and just outside the AVCA top-25 national rankings, led 13-8 midway through the opening set after a Julianne Miller kill. However the Trailblazers (12-13/10-7 PacWest) would mount a furious rally, outscoring the Cougars 17-4 to stun APU and take the opening set by a 25-17 count.
Kayla Chapman (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) spurred the rally with four kills, while
Hannah Doonan (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas HS) collected three kills, as DSU took the early match lead.
DSU kept the momentum going in set two, building a five-point lead at 10-5 following a
Shannon Sorensen (Smithfield, Utah/Sky View HS) kill. APU stayed within striking distance and would eventually pull even at 16-16. The two sides would trade points and the lead through the 23-23, but the Trailblazers managed to induce an APU attack error to reach set point at 24-23, which Doonan clinched with another kill.
Dixie State never trailed in the deciding third set and led by as many as seven points in the stanza before completing the sweep with a 25-21 win.
Doonan finished with a game-high 11 kills and hit .357 for the match to go with eight digs, while Chapman tallied eight kills and four total blocks. Gammell and
Kaycee Adams (Syracuse, Utah/Syracuse HS) each chipped in seven kills and combined for seven total blocks, and
Brette Barney (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott HS) collected six kills and a game-high tying six total blocks in her Senior Day start. Freshman setter
Jordyn Nelson (Phoenix, Ariz./Greenway HS) notched her team-high ninth double-double of the year with 23 assists and 10 digs.
Dixie State hit .262 for the match with 44 kills, including a .405 clip in the opening frame Meanwhile, the DSU defense limited APU to a .133 hitting percentage and forced 21 Cougar hitting errors, while the Trailblazers finished with 10 total blocks and 62 digs, including a game-high 22 digs from libero
Sid Brandon (Bountiful, Utah/Bountiful HS).
Dixie State will close out its 2017 home slate against Academy of Art on Sunday at 12 noon at the DSU SAC.
