Feickert pitches first DSU perfect game as storm sweep Urban Knights

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Dixie State pitcher Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, CA/Highland ) made history Friday with a five-inning perfect game to beat Academy of Art 8-0 in game two of a doubleheader, sweeping the day after a 12-0 win the first game.

The perfect game is the first in Dixie State (27-5, 18-0) Division II history.

"I'm very happy for Aryn," head coach Randy Simkins said. "We all know anytime either her or [Michelle] Duncan pitches they have a chance to do something special and she was very good today."

Feickert's gem went 15 batters up and 15 batters down with seven strikeouts, aided by a walk-off two-run homer from Josey Hartman (Mapleton, UT/Maple Mountain) in the bottom of the fifth to run-rule the Urban Knights (12-15, 7-7) and extend DSU's winning streak to 21 games.

"She did a very good job of getting ahead of hitters," Simkins said. "She made them swing at her pitches."

Dixie State outhit the visitors 20-3 on the day. Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) and Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) combined for a three-hit shutout in game one. Courtney Hine (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas High School) had two hits and two RBI in each game.

Game 1 Recap
Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) was dominant again in her 15th win of the season. She allowed two hits over four innings with one strikeout. Beardshear worked the fifth and gave up a lone hit.

Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) went 2 for 3 with three RBI while Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School) added a 2 for 2 game with three RBI and a double. Hine went 2 for 2 with a double.

Leading 2-0 in the second inning, DSU broke it open with five runs. After Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) tripled, a sacrifice fly by Chavez scored Sherwin and three straight base hits from Hine, Beardshear and Reiter brought in four more.

Chavez brought in two more in the third with another single and Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, UT/Tooele) scored on a double steal. Bailee Freeland (Ogden, UT/Bonneville High School) singled through the right side to score Kristie Johnson (Temecula, CA/Chaparral High School) to make it 11-0 after three innings.

A fielder's choice added one more when Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) scored on Cassidy Morton (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch)'s grounder. Dixie State cruised to a 12-0 victory to take the first of the series.

Game 2 Recap
Beardshear struck again in the first inning with an RBI single to start things fast for the Red Storm.

As it turns out that would be all the run support Feickert needed as she struckout seven of the first nine batters she faced.

The outfield snagged some tricky fly balls to keep Feickert's perfecto intact and Dixie State added two runs on a Hine double in the third and another RBI single from Beardshear.

Three more runs came in the form of bases-loaded walks to three batters in the fourth for the Red Storm to build a 6-0 lead heading into the fifth.

Feickert went 1-2-3 again in the top-half of the fifth and with Gelter on base, Hartman blasted one over the left field wall for an 8-0 perfect win.

Dixie State takes on Academy of Art for two more on Saturday at 11 a.m. MT.
