Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Chaminade Wednesday

Dixie State saw its four-match winning streak come to an end Wednesday night as Chaminade rallied from two sets down to defeat the Storm, 19-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-13, at the DSU Student Activities Center. The loss dropped DSU to 7-8, 4-3 in Pacific West Conference play, while the Silverswords improved to 11-3, 4-2 in league action.

Dixie State took the first set by six points after outscoring Chaminade 7-1 to break an 18-18 tie. The Storm hit .303 in the opening frame and held the Silverswords to a .030 hitting percentage. DSU used a similar run in set two as the Storm broke a 15-15 deadlock with a 10-4 spurt to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

The Storm looked as if they were poised for a sweep after jumping out to a 12-5 lead in set three, but Chaminade had other ideas as the Silverswords slowly chipped away at the deficit and eventually pulled even at 18-18. The two teams traded points until the match reached 23-23, which was when Chaminade tallied the final two points of the set to extend the match.

Chaminade recorded a match-high 17 kills in set four and hit .306 overall, while DSU was held to an .080 percentage, as the Silverswords hit their way to seven-point in the stanza to force a deciding game five. Chaminade scored six-straight points to turn an 11-11 tie into a 17-11 lead in coasting to the set win.

Dixie State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the fifth set, but Chaminade would rally to tie and take a three-point lead of its own at 12-9 late in the set. DSU battled back with four-straight points to reclaim the lead at 13-12, but the Silverswords would get a kill and take advantage of two costly Storm hitting errors, which accounted for Chaminade's final two points to clinch the match.

DSU finished with 49 kills, though the Storm hit just .144 for the match. Freshman Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View HS) finished with a team-high 13 kills, while junior Kailey Frei (Orem, Utah/Timpanogos HS) posted a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs to go with four total blocks, and senior Alex Anderson (Prescott, Ariz./Prescott HS) recorded 40 digs and three service aces. Chaminade finished with 61 kills for the match and a .176 hitting percentage.

Dixie State will play match six of its seven-match homestand Saturday afternoon vs. Hawai'i Pacific at 12 noon at the DSU SAC.
