Storm Complete Sweep of Azusa Pacific

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAINT GEORGE -- The Dixie State softball team completed a four-game sweep of Azusa Pacific today with a 2-1 pitchers duel win and a 11-3 run-rule shortened victory at Karl Brooks Field.

In game two the Red Storm (34-11, 22-6 PacWest) erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on eight hits to extend their winning streak to eight games.

In the opener, Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) retired 15 consecutive batters enroute to a 2-1 victory over the Cougars (21-22, 10-16 PacWest).

The Red Storm nursed a 1-0 lead through five innings until Azusa Pacific shortstop Rachel Miller hit a solo home run over the left field wall to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the sixth. In her next at-bat in the bottom of the frame, DSU shortstop Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) answered with a home run of her own, her ninth on the season, that proved to be the game-winner.

DSU sophomore ace Duncan (16-2) protected the one-run lead from the circle, retiring 15-straight batters stretching from the first inning to the Miller homer. Azusa hurler Rita Kim (8-8) only allowed one hit during that same stretch and four total.

In game two, APU sent Mariah Worley (3-3) to duel with Dixie State's Kate Coffey (Fallon, NV/Churchill County High School) (10-4) for the second game. The Cougars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after Miller picked up her second home run of the day and designated player Heather Koch doubled to score two more.

Coffey managed to hold the Cougars to only one hit for the remainder of the game, but had to rely on her team's hitting to erase the deficit.

The Red Storm bats came and went during the comeback. They racked up six hits in the first four innings, but stranded seven runners on base and only managed one run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Worley showed signs of fatigue, prompting the Azusa coach to call on Kim in relief. Anna Cue (Murrieta Valley, CA/Murrieta Valley High School) greeted Kim with a clutch  three-run double to right center field. Up 4-3, the Storm weren't finished and continued to pelt Cougar pitching and scored 10 runs in the inning to secure the five inning victory.

With the sweep, Dixie State keeps pace atop the PacWest standings with leader Grand Canyon. Currently the Storm trail GCU by one game in the loss column. The Storm have the weekend off, while the Lopes travel to Azusa Pacific before the two squads meet to end the regular season at Karl Brooks Field in two weeks.
