VB: Storm Quieted by Cal Poly Pomona

Loss to tourney co-host splits Friday's action

#11 Madisyn Fitzgerald
BOX SCORE: CPP 3, DSC 1

POMONA, CALIF. –
Cal Poly Pomona emphatically closed out a three set to one victory over Dixie State on Friday night by scoring the match's final 10 points unanswered. The Broncos prevailed 23-25, 25-12, 31-29, 25-12 to close out day two of the CPP/CSULA Labor Day Tournament.

Cal Poly rebounded from a defeat earlier in the day to Academy of Art to even up their season record at 2-1. The Red Storm dropped to 1-1 after failing to capitalize on their win over Northwood University.

Brita Noble led the DSC offense with 11 kills while committing just four errors. Madisyn Fitzgerald (Mesa, AZ/Mountain View) tallied the best hitting percentage at .333 (8/3/15). Overall, the Storm finished with a .141 percentage (39/19/142).

Libero Jayci Jeffress (Brighton. CO/Brighton) had a team-high 20 digs and Alex Shearer (Park City. UT/Park City) had a nice defensive dig effort with 11. Kimee Clark assisted on 33 kills and served up four aces.

In game one, the Red Storm were down 17-11 before reeling off nine points in 12 rallies to pull even at 20-20. After trading side outs, Noble and Shannon Young (Whittier, CA/St Paul) combined on three kills to give DSC the game one win.

Cal Poly separated themselves in game two with a nine-point spurt before the Storm ended the streak on a Madisyn Fitzgerald (Mesa, AZ/Mountain View) point. The Broncos would cruise behind four kills from Kristin McNeese and Jessica Doerner.

Game three saw the Storm down 24-22 before three straight points gave them the chance to win. CPP responded with a crucial kill and held off Dixie State to take a 2-1 set lead.

After pulling within three points (15-12) in the fourth set, the home Broncos rattled off a convincing final run to end the match. McNeese had five of her 14 kills in the spurt.

Cal Poly posted an impressive team hitting percentage of .297 (64/18/155) and stymied many DSC attempts with 10 blocks.

Dixie State resumes competition in the tournament on Saturday with two matches. At 12 Noon MDT, DSC faces the Clan of Simon Fraser University. A 6:00pm match with co-host Cal State Los Angeles will follow that to close out the event.

The Storm will not play at home match until October 1 against Academy of Art.
