Haslam Hurt in Red Storm Loss in Laie (2/2/2009)

LAIE. HI – The bottom line first: BYU-Hawaii. behind 35 points from senior forward Latoya Wily beat the Red Storm of Dixie State 81-77 Monday night on the north shore of Oahu.



Minutes into the second half. Dixie State center BreAnne Haslam (Mountain Green. UT/Morgan) was injured during a scramble on the floor following a loose-ball rebound. Haslam fell to the floor and had her head and neck pinned under Wiley as she fell to the hard court. Haslam was unconscious for a moment and had to be taken off the floor on a stretcher. Preliminary reports indicate Haslam suffered partial paralysis to the right side of her body. but doctors are very encouraged that all movement and strength will return in time. The Red Storm was led in scoring on the court by Jessie Ingraham (Tuscon. AZ/Canyon Del Oro) with 19 points with 16 coming after the break. Deney Phommabout (West Valley CIty. UT/Hillcrest) had another double-digit performance off the bench with 16 and Tanya Clark (Beaumont. CA/Beaumont) had 10 points. Courtney Boyd (Keokuk. IA/Keokuk) came close to DSC's first triple-double with nine points. eight boards and seven assists.



The game featured 11 lead changes and 13 ties. The biggest lead at any time was eight by the Seasiders early in the second half.



Wily. the third leading scorer in the nation entering Monday's game. proved to be too much under the hoop hitting 15-of-18 shots and making five-of-seven from the free-throw line. Three other BYU-Hawaii starters hit double figures: Richelle Fenenbock (15).  Mahina Goga (14) and Dara Tompkins (10).



The Seasiders outshot Dixie State 44.4% to 42.9% and outrebounded the Red Storm by 4 (43-39).



The win propelled BYU-Hawaii (10-7) into a third place tie with Dixie State (11-8) in the Pac West at 4-2. a full-game behind Hawaii Pacific and a game and a half behind Grand Canyon.



Dixie State will look to bounce back Wednesday night against the Silverswords of Chaminade in Honolulu. Game time is schedule for 5:30pm.
