Trailblazers' WAC Tourney Run Ends in Friday Loss to SFA

Utah Tech saw its inaugural NCAA Division I postseason run come to an end after a 2-0 loss to Stephen F. Austin in a Friday elimination game at the 2023 University Credit Union WAC Softball Tournament at the GCU Softball Stadium.

The WAC regular season champion Trailblazers closed their third D-I transition season with a 35-18 overall record.

SFA (30-23) struck for two runs on three hits in the first inning, with both runs coming on consecutive two-out singles off of fifth-year starter Kate Dolinski (L, 12-6).

However that would be it for the Lady 'Jacks and Dolinksi held SFA to just three singles and six total base runners over her final five innings of work.

Meanwhile her counterpart, Brooke Gainous, limited the high-powered Utah Tech offense to only one hit over her first four innings in the circle.

The Trailblazers finally had a chance to break through in the fifth with two on and two out, but the Lady 'Jacks would escape the jam with the lead intact.

Utah Tech would again bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate with two down in the sixth, but were turned away by Gainous to keep it a 2-0 game.

The Blazers had one last hope with two outs in the seventh when Carly Eldredge was plunked by Gainous, but the SFA hurler managed to record the final out two pitches later to end Utah Tech's tournament run.

Utah Tech was held to just four hits on the day, with Hannah Hughbanks, Oaklee Trapp, LB Kahahawai-Kekona and Eldredge accounting for all four Blazer safeties. Dolinski struck out three over six innings complete in her final time in the circle for the Trailblazers.
