Trailblazers Roll to Saturday Sweep at Southern Utah

Utah Tech pushed its WAC winning streak to six-straight with a sweep of a Saturday doubleheader at in-state rival Southern Utah at Kathryn Berg Field. The Trailblazers rolled to a 13-3 victory in six innings in game one, before rallying for a 9-6 triumph in the nightcap.

The Trailblazers (30-16/15-5 WAC) led wire-to-wire in the series opener, plating single runs in their first two innings before erupting for six runs in the fourth to race out to an 8-0 advantage.

Lauren Almeida got Utah Tech on the board when she cashed in a two-out Shea Clements double with an RBI-single. Rachel Campbell then made a two-run lead with her fifth home run of the season to lead off the Blazer second inning.

Utah Tech blew the game open in the fourth, sending 10 batters to the plate, six of whom would drive in runs, as part of a six-hit barrage.

The early run support bolstered a strong start from fifth-year pitcher Kate Dolinski (W, 10-4), who limited the Thunderbirds to just two hits over her first four innings of work.

However SUU (6-29/3-17 WAC) would spoil Dolinski's bid for a run-rule shutout in the fifth when Emily Gonzalez connected for a two-out, three-run homer to send the game to the sixth inning.

The Trailblazers took full advantage of the extra offensive frame, scoring five more runs on five hits to stretch their lead to 10 runs. Dolinski then retired SUU in order in the home sixth to end the game.

Utah Tech outhit SUU 17-5 in game one, as eight of the nine Blazer starters had at least one hit. Clements, Almeida and Campbell each tallied three hits and combined to score seven of UT's 13 runs in the win.

Trailing 3-1 after three innings complete in the nightcap, Utah Tech plated eight-unanswered runs, scoring two runs in each of its next four offensive frames, to vault to a commanding 9-3 lead.

The Blazers tied the game in the fourth thanks to consecutive one-out, RBI-singles from LB Kahahawai-Kekona and Carly Eldredge. Utah Tech then took the lead for good in the fifth when Oaklee Trapp doubled down the left field line to chase home Clements. Campbell later singled home Trapp to extend the UT lead to 6-3.

Utah Tech would tack on two more runs in the sixth before Campbell added the exclamation point in the seventh with her second homer of the day and her sixth of the year, a two-run shot to center that gave the Blazers a six-run cushion.

SUU would make it interesting in the seventh, when after a two-out Blazer error extended the game, Gonzalez stepped up and hit her second three-run homer of the afternoon to cut the Utah Tech lead in half.

That would be it for the T-Birds though as freshman hurler Sauren Garton (W, 11-5) recorded the final out to clinch the Saturday sweep and keep Utah Tech in first place in the WAC standings.

Clements continued her hot hitting as she went 4-for-4 with a double and a stolen base, while Campbell collected three more hits to go with her three RBI.

Utah Tech will play for the overall series sweep on Sunday beginning at 12 noon.
